In May this year, Austria hosted the 60th Eurovision Song Contest after fabulous Conchita had won last year’s competition in Copenhagen, and the Austrian national broadcaster ORF ‘employed’ 800 volunteers to help stage the event.
I couldn’t miss such a great opportunity to experience up-close the “behind the scenes” of such a huge event, so I signed up and after a lengthy casting process involving interviews and English tests and translating French texts directly from the sheet, I was able to grab a spot among the lucky 800 and was assigned at the Press Center.
There, we had to assist the 2.000 accredited journalists, tell them where to find stuff/people, hand them their mail and promotion goodies, assign them time slots for interviews with the artists, pass the microphone during press conferences… it was extremely fun and exciting and I learned a lot about how television works, and we were even able to attend one of the shows (in my case, second semi finale) for free.
I cannot recommend volunteering enough – if you ever get the chance to be part of a event like the ESC, grab it with both hands, it’s amazing!!
…and as for this picture, I decided to draw a manga (or rather, collection of four-panel strips) about all the crazy stuff that happened at the Press Center during those two weeks, and this is the cover illustration~
